TODAY:
Well I am typing this entry with my right hand while my
broken left hand sits on my left knee in a splint. If you didn't read my last
blog, I broke my left wrist while ice skating last Monday night. Life with one
hand is not fun, but today it is not in as bad of pain as it was on Monday.
It’s a joy (sarcasm) to sleep with, and yesterday I went to try on some new
clothes. That was fun trying to button shirts and zip up and button multiple
pairs of pants, also with one hand!
I am playing it safe and avoiding any activity that has
any potential risk of causing a fall. So riding my road bike right now is not
an option. Of course this week the temps are in the 60s and 70s and I am
chomping at the bit. From what I am gathering from reading on the web, wrist
injuries can take 6-weeks to heal---even longer. So at the end of April, I will
hopefully be able to get back on my bike.
I will see an Orthopedist on Monday and he can tell me how
serious my injury is. Hopefully I won’t need surgery.
I didn’t lose any weight this week. Perhaps it’s because I
didn’t do anything to get my heart pounding---or break a sweat. Perhaps there
is a little more fluid retaining due to the injury. Perhaps having a splint and
ace bandages on the arm weigh a little. Its all good. I’ve been a good boy this
week and am bouncing back from this injury.
I have continued to eat perfectly with my “slow carb”
diet, and have done some walking this week. I think I will get some good
recumbent biking in at the gym, and see how spin biking feels with one hand. I
need to be putting in 20 miles a day if I can. So eating my whole foods, and
getting some serious exercise in for now will be my plan of attack for the next
6 weeks. If I could take off 20-30 pounds during that period, then I can be off
to riding at a good weight.
Yesterday, I went shopping to buy some new clothes! And I
have exciting news…The biggest pair of pants I’ve ever worn is a size 50.
Lately I’ve been wearing 48. Today, I fit into 44s! And, I have worn 5X shirts
before, but mostly wear 4Xs. Well today, I bought some 2X shirts!!!! I can’t
believe it. It feels so good to put away these baggy clothes and to start
wearing some that fit normal. Yee Haw!!
The other great news I want to share are my blood test
results from my blood draw last week on my 1-year anniversary.
All my results are vastly improved from last year. I am
pretty much in normal range! Hear are some highlights:
Cholesterol Total
Normal 158-199
Feb ’12 225
Feb ’13 173
Triclycerides (Blood Fat)
Normal 58-149
Feb ’12 180
Feb ’13 91
LDL
Normal less than 100
Feb ’12 147
Feb ’13 109
(still a tad high)
A1C (Test to determine long-range potential for diabetes)
Normal less than 5.7
Feb ’12 6.1
Feb ’13 5.5
Glucose
Normal 65-99
Feb ’12 119
Feb ’13 109
(I am on the lower end now of pre-diabetes)
I am not out of the woods on diabetes, although you can
see that I am heading in the right direction. Diabetes runs in my family, and
so it is a real factor in my genes. By the way, When I did this blood test, I
had only been doing the “no sugar/carbs” diet for a week or so. I think in
August I’ll go back and see how things look.
Another side note is that when I was at Instacare this
past Monday, they took my blood pressure. It was 119/7?. A year ago in my doc’s
office it was 140/80.
I think this is a great report card.
Despite the pain in my broken wrist, these results
outshine the pain! And it’s also my free day today…so that makes everything good
too. It’s breakfast at the Amber this morning!
I’ll let you know how things go at the Orthopedists this
Monday.
I hope you are enjoying warmer weather whereever you are!
Happy shoving beans in your pie-hole.

This is what Mount Fuji looked like yesterday in Japan. I had a dream about her last night. |
Wow, what great results! That is truly awesome. Our bodies are incredible machines. I hope you get good news from the Doc today about your wrist.
ReplyDeleteI'll give more details soon, but I only needed a cast! Whew...no surgery. I plan to be pack in the race soon!!
